Tipping customs vary dramatically across the world — and getting it wrong can be embarrassing at best, or considered offensive at worst. In the United States, tipping 15–20% at restaurants is essentially mandatory and forms a significant part of server wages. In Japan, tipping is considered rude and may even be refused.
In many European countries, a service charge is legally included in the bill, so adding an extra tip is optional but appreciated. In parts of the Middle East, tipping is expected but the amount varies by country and venue type.

- In the USA and Canada — tipping below 15% at restaurants is seen as a signal of poor service.
- Hotel housekeeping is often overlooked — $1–2 per night left daily (not at checkout) ensures the right person receives it.
